IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun 3880-01 Luxury Watch Review

http://www.thewatchbox.com/watches/iwc/ The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun 3880-01 combines the look of the classic IWC Big Pilot watch with the practicality of the Pilot Chronograph and the allure of the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School: “Top Gun.” The result is an all-ceramic luxury sports watch with authentic aviation heritage and Hollywood-inspired flair for style. “Top Gun” - the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School - needs no introduction to fans of luxury watches and high performance machinery. As the home of advanced aerial maneuvering combat instruction since 1969, "Top Gun" has become an icon of global popular culture and the dream of armchair aviators. With the IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun, part of that dream comes true. This 46mm aviation instrument is styled in the image of IWC's original 1940 "B-uhr" military aviation watch. All calibrations and hands jump from the matte black dial with legibility born of their no-nonsense "milspec" origins. Originally designed for fighter pilots, the "Big Pilot's" combination of broadsword hands and altimeter-style hour track continue to exemplify the form-follows function philosophy. The “Top-Gun” models represent a third pillar of IWC’s Pilots watches. “Big Pilot” models are direct tributes to the pioneering interwar and WWII references; “Pilot” models tend to draw their inspiration from the “Mark” series of IWC aviation watches that debuted after the war. Since 2007, the “Top Gun” series has represented a more flamboyant and experimental take on the modern luxury pilot’s watch than the two traditional IWC offerings. In deference to the Big Pilot's Watch Top Gun's inspiration, a low-key simulacrum of a red fighter jet silhouette acts as the counterweight to the seconds hand. The case back is anything but stealthy; a large red, white, and blue "Top Gun" logo from the 1986 film poster adorns the solid reverse side of the IWC Big Pilot's Watch Top Gun. Within the massive black ceramic case, IWC fits the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun 3880-01 with an in-house automatic flyback chronograph caliber 89365. As a true manufacture caliber, the 89365 was designed specifically for oversize modern watches, especially rugged sports models. A free-sprung escapement, shock-protected winding rotor, lubrication-free ceramic bearings, and 68-hour power reserve keep this one on-point even when when the owner is knocked off-balance. But each IWC caliber 89365 features refinements that would have impressed old man Pellaton. The free-sprung balance wheel is exceptionally resistant to shock-induced timing error, and a superb 68-hour power reserve ensures exceptional endurance. While Albert Pellaton might have been surprised to see this kind of innovation, today's customers shouldn't be; would you expect any less from a watch named in honor of Naval Aviation. This IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun 3880-01 is available from thewatchbox.com with all original factory boxes, papers, and the balance of the original IWC factory warranty.
