Two of the premier manufactures in luxury watchmaking pit their might against one another in a battle of the brands that runs the gamut from design to watchmaking. Both 40mm, stainless steel, exceptionally rare, and highly sought, the Rolex GMT Master II “Pepsi” 126710BLRO and the Grand Seiko Hi-Beat GMT “Peacock” SBGJ227 are class-rival luxury travel watches for discerning watch enthusiasts. Rolex raised the roof at Baselworld 2018 with its revival of the “Pepsi” bezel GMT in a stainless steel case. Limited to white gold from 2014 to 2017, the blue and red GMT Master 2 roared back to mainstream relevance with a new $9,250 steel model mounted on a Rolex Jubilee bracelet. The Cerachrom GMT bezel of the 126710BLRO incorporates the classic day/night distinction first employed on the Bakelite bezel of the 1955 Rolex 6542 GMT Master. Now rendered in scratch resistant ceramic, the revived Pepsi created immediate waitlists at authorized Rolex dealers and immense secondary market markups. Rolex’s Jubilee bracelet has been upgraded to include an Oyser clasp with Easylink 5mm tool-free adjustment. It connects to a Rolex 904L stainless steel case equipped with a Triplock crown and Oyster caseback that achieves 100-meter water resistance. Inside the case, a Rolex in house caliber 3285 automatic movement sports a 70-hour power reserve, COSC (and “Superlative”) chronometer certification, and a dual time function that displays two independent time zones in 12 hour and 24 hour formats. Grand Seiko preceded Rolex’s Basel bomb by a handful of months when it launched the Hi-Beat GMT SBGJ277 “Peacock” as a limited edition of 700 pieces. Based on the 2014 GPGH laureate Hi-Beat GMT, the “Peacock” declared new aesthetic ambitions by upgrading the GPGH winner’s green sunburst dial to an extravagant green feather-like array of lines that drew immediate comparisons to a peacock’s plume. The Grand Seiko SBGJ227 is build around a manufacture caliber 9S86 automatic hi-beat GMT caliber. This movement beats at 36,000 vibrations per hour, includes a power reserve of 55 hours, and can be set to display two independent time zones in 12 hour and 24 hour formats. The movement can be appreciated under a display caseback. Despite the caseback sapphire, the Grand Seiko “Peacock” remains water resistant to 100 meters. Each Grand Seiko Hi-Beat GMT SBGJ227 includes a stamped dial plate that is galvanized and varnished to create the signature “peacock” feather plume. The style incorporates elements of stamped guilloche, lacquer, and electronic galvanizing to create the distinctive green dial that lends this model its name. The 40mm stainless steel Grand Seiko SBGJ227 includes the polyhedron case shape associated with the historic Grand Seiko 44GS. This sharply faceted and highly polished watch case is enhanced via Grand Seiko’s proprietary “Zaratsu” polish tin plate finishing. A Grand Seiko artisan applies manual pressure to mill the steel case against a spinning tin plate. The resulting polish is optically flawless and mirror-like. A stainless steel Grand Seiko bracelet with deployant clasp completes the equipment set for the Hi-Beat GMT. Grand Seiko vs Rolex (or Rolex vs Grand Seiko) starts now!
