This Week in Watches: Rolex vs Vintage Rolex, Audemars' Anniversary, Omega News, Japanese Watches

subscribe at https://www.youtube.com/watchboxstudios /// visit at www.thewatchbox.com Tim Mosso and Joshua Thanos of thewatchbox.com bring the popular Watchbox Studios news program, "This Week in Watches," to YouTube's number one watch enthusiast channel, Ablogtowatch. Tim and Josh discuss the news of the week from the world of luxury watches. This week, we consider the merits of choosing a vintage Rolex Sea Dweller over a contemporary Sea Dweller 126600, the "50th Anniversary Sea Dweller." New watch releases from Chopard and Audemars Piguet receive attention. Chopard's LUC Urushi Year of the Dog limited edition combines the Chinese Zodiac sign for 2018 with a limited run of 88 LUC Chopard automatics painted in a traditional Japanese Urushi lacquer process. The resulting watch depicts a Japanese Akita dog on the dial side while featuring a Chopard manufacture micro-rotor automatic caliber 96.17 on the reverse. More broadly, Tim and Josh consider whether regional editions of luxury watches are a worth sub-genre of collectible horology or a gimmick destined to lose appeal over time and distance. Audemars Piguet celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Royal Oak Offshore in the year 2018, and two new families of Royal Oak Offshore chronograph are available for dedicated collectors. The first, reference 26237, is a faithful re-creation of the first 1993 Royal Oak Offshore model 25721. The second limited edition, however, is likely to spark passionate debate among the Audemars Piguet faithful. We debate the style and substance of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph 26421 in steel or rose gold. Ariel Adams of Ablogtowatch joins us for a special-segment answer to a viewer's question regarding whether we will ever know the identities of today's luxury watch designers and stylists the way we know the work of Gerald Genta, Jorg Hysek, and Emmanuel Gueit. News from the world of luxury watches includes the opening of the first-ever Grand Seiko brand-exclusive boutique in Los Angeles, Omega's new watch factory in Bienne, Switzerland, and a party to celebrate 35 years of the Casio G-Shock sports watch. Regarding the last, we consider Casio's teaser of an upcoming G-Shock DW5600 crafted from sapphire and carbon fiber; the price is rumored to be $100,000 US, and each example is said to require one month to manufacture.
