Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore "Navy" Chronograph Luxury Watch Review

The New Navy has set sail, and this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph "Navy" is the flagship of the fleet. Introduced at SIHH 2014, this is a landmark model on two levels. First, this AP ROO "Navy" is the second generation of the legendary "Themes" series model introduced to universal acclaim in 2008. Having enjoyed a storming run from the moment of its inception, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore "Navy" sat in the vanguard of models due to launch with the 2014 revamp of the 42mm Royal Oak Offshore lineup. This example features Audemars Piguet's superb "Diver" natural rubber strap, appropriately crafted in a rich "navy" blue hue. The supple rubber surface feels silken against the skin and endows this 100m (330ft) luxury sports watch to take the plunge into pools, surf, or the shower without a strap swap. And on that count, the new "Navy" brings unprecedented visual firepower. Its display case back is the first ever on a non-limited 42mm Royal Oak Offshore, and the in-house Audemars Piguet caliber 3126/3840 is revealed in glory for the "captain's" viewing pleasure. New aesthetic cues transform the previously austere dial to a rich collage of colors: blue, white, and accents of orange. The new light-on-dark color scheme improves legibility of the dial and indications while adding lighthearted character that relieve some of the original's stolid martial bearing. For good measure, the original Royal Oak Offshore's fragile synthetic (nitrile) covers of the crown and chronograph pushers have been swapped for rugged ceramic.
