http://www.thewatchbox.com The Girard-Perregaux Seahawk II BMW Oracle Limited Edition takes the longtime G-P sports watch to the pinnacle of yacht racing. Launched in 2005 to commemorate the BMW Oracle America's Cup Syndicate, the Seahawk II BMW Oracle proved an ideal timing companion for the team's 2010 and 2013 Cup championships; this example is ready to hit the waves for summer 2015. Girard-Perregaux launched the Seahawk name prior to World War II, but the model only became a sports watch in the modern sense during the 1960s. But it wasn't until the 2002 "Seahawk II" reboot that the model truly set itself apart from the pack of Submariner/Seamaster lookalikes. Anything but a me-too design, the Seahawk II is precisely the kind of 100% original vision a true manufacture like Girard-Perregaux should achieve in every model. After all, what's the point of building a movement in-house if it's housed in a generic package? Still fresh and distinctive today, the Seahawk II's secure off-center crown, displaced date, and useful power-reserve indicator are immediately recognizable by true aficionados of high horology. Also quite practical, the 40mm stainless steel case of the BMW Oracle is sensibly sized and free of the grating "wrist rub" that afflicts many sports watches with prominent crown guards at three o'clock. The inclusion of a power reserve on an automatic watch may seem counter intuitive, but automatic or not, a watch that is on its last few moments of mainspring wind is not a safe diving companion: very thoughtful, G-P. The BMW Oracle team tributes are evident at 12 o'clock on the dial and an engraved dedication on the case back. Neither mark will prove obtrusive; the additions on the dial read as a playful accent of color when viewed from arm's length, and the brand identities can be discerned only under close scrutiny. A prominent unidirectional rotating bezel with lumed index, high-contrast white hands, 300-meter (1000-foot) water resistance, and brilliant dial lume secure the Seahawk's dive watch credentials. More than a surf-top companion for sailors, the Girard-Perregaux Seahawk II BMW Oracle is a hale and hearty "plongeur" for rubbing elbows with the deep sea denizens from Rolex and Omega. As a true manufacture, Girard-Perregaux manufactures both the cases and the movements for its watches. A 3300-series automatic caliber powers the Seahawk II BMW Oracle and yields a power reserve of 42-46 hours. A stop-second (hacking) feature permits precise synchronization prior to dive time.
