Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Power Reserve PAM 423 Luxury Watch Review

http://www.thewatchbox.com/watches/panerai The Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Power Reserve PAM 423 is a beautiful brute. With its classic martial stance, 47mm "1950" case, subtle complication, and high-polish finish, the PAM 423 combines the best elements of Panerai's past and present. At arm's length, the Luminor 1950 PAM 423 looks the part of mid-century tactical gear. The no-nonsense dial tells the time in bold characters- period. Its case reads like a bank vault and the crown guard looks ready to pull double duty as the business end of an impromptu brass (stainless?) knuckle. A traditional Panerai distressed calf-leather strap completes the effect. For good measure, Panerai graces the simulated-patina "dirty dial" with a halo of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. But look closer, and refinement assets itself. Consider the 18 karat rose gold hands; they complement the subdued ecru tones of the patina indexes. A discreet power reserve gauge at 4:30 recalls classic modern era Panerai Luminor models such as the PAM 124, PAM 126, and the PAM 222 Regatta. This is a polished luxury product in every sense; every surface of the bezel and gracefully contoured "1950" case gleams. Reintroduced to the Panerai line in 2002, the “1950” case restores the original proportions and impressive compound curves of the early NATO-era Panerai combat watches employed by Italian combat swimmers.. Inside the famous Panerai Luminor "cushion" case, a Panerai in-house Caliber P.3002 keeps time better than any of the mid-century Panerai warhorse movements. With a free-sprung balance, dual-anchored balance bridge, and modern shock protection, the Panerai P.3002 can take knocks that would have put the originals out of action. As befits a luxury product, unseen refinements abound in the Caliber P.3002. An independent "time zone" hour hand setting system adds utility for the modern watch owner. Its impressive 72-hour (three-day) power reserve is displayed on the dial-side gauge. Colors, subtle refinements, and reverence for heritage define the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Power Reserve PAM 423. See it in high-resolution images on www.thewatchbox.com.
