Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Commemorative Luxury Watch Review

http://www.thewatchbox.com While the America's Cup regatta ranks marginally ahead of polo in public awareness, the America's Cup "tribute watch" is a veritable sports watch class unto itself. This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Commemorative - 1 of only 1,000 made - represents the head of this shockingly competitive class. At 44mm in diameter and rendered in titanium, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Commemorative covers almost as much real estate as its sprawling moniker. Although the watch boasts tremendous wrist presence, Audemars Piguet's choice of a titanium case ensures that the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi wears with comfort and ease. A matching titanium bracelet offers a more integrated aesthetic than the Royal Oak Offshore on a leather strap. Moreover, the waterproof metal bracelet ensures easy surf/turf transitions for a summer of fun with the 10ATM water resistant Alinghi. Audemars Piguet offers outstanding security on the wrist by providing a double-deployant clasp with clamshell locking device. As the eye migrates from case to dial, take a moment to admire the traditional Royal Oak octagonal bezel... notice anything special? This limited edition features not one but TWO precious metals in the form of a platinum bezel and white gold bezel bolts. The brushed grain of the platinum face contrasts with the bezel's brilliant polished shoulders; high-polish white gold bolt heads sit recessed amid the deeply grained platinum. Within its vast "grand tapisserie" (waffle pattern) dial, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi features a surprisingly useful collection of complications. The "surprise" stems from the Alinghi's reliance on a second time zone, power reserve, and date in place of the ubiquitous (but often puzzling) "regatta" chronograph that seems almost obligatory on yachting-themed complicated watches. Outside of the structured world of nautical match-racing, 5-10 minute countdown timers require some creativity to employ with a straight face. But a dual-time with a power reserve? That just makes solid sense! Inside the titanium case, an Audemars Piguet caliber 2229/2895 automatic movement keeps the time. Based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre cal. 889 that has driven countless AP complications since the 1980s (including all of the original Offshores), this movement is Vallee de Joux to the core. Designed by JLC, improved and finished by AP, and paired with a complication module, this refined movement is a worthy heart for a champion of high horology. Whether you're a fan of regatta or not, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Commemorative is a winning combination of square-jawed good looks and practical complications.
