WuW Live: IWC's (Albert) Pellaton Winding System For IWC Automatic Watches

Envisioned by IWC watchmaker Albert Pellaton in the late 1940s and serialized in the early 1950s, the Pellaton winding system was a late arrival to the automatic watch scene. However, the innovative combination of cams and pawl-wheel drive made the Pellaton system both original and efficient. The system remains in use at IWC to this day. Its combination of bi-directional winding and a shock-protected winding wheel ensures smooth and durable operation. Tim demonstrates the IWC Pellaton system using a series of graphics and a physical example of an IWC caliber 89361 with a modern four-pawl upgrade on the traditional two-pawl Pellaton winding gear. The rotor actuates two cams in sequence; these cams drive pawls that hook and draw a pawl wheel connected by reduction gears to the mainspring barrel.
