About Roadster

Introduced in 2001 yet inspired by sports cars from the 1950s and 60s, the Cartier Roadster is a timeless dress watch collection that flaunts a distinctive tonneau-shaped case, as well as a number of precious metals. Collectors may find men’s and women’s Roadster models in both mechanical and quartz calibers, and styles range from sleek white gold and stainless steel to rich rose and yellow gold.

Perhaps the most compelling element of this collection, however, is its ties to decades past. Its curved silhouette resembles an aerodynamic roadster and its sunken screws on the lug mimic the headlights on classic cars like the Alfa Romeo Spider and Aston Martin Racing. Additionally, the crown design looks like the fins on old school Cadillacs while references with Arabic numerals, or “roulette” dials, resemble the speedometer of a Porsche 356 Speedster.

While the Cartier Roadster can easily be confused for a sports watch because of its name and influence, it is far from one. In fact, the Roadster is a versatile dress piece that’s available in a range of functions like classic three-hand models, compelling chronographs, and functional GMTs. Most models are also equipped with a 100m water-resistance, 42-hour power reserve, stop seconds, and a modified ETA caliber with automatic winding. For standard men’s pieces, most cases measure in at around 43mm x 38mm while most women’s pieces are about 36mm x 30mm. In 2010, Cartier released the slightly more conservative Roadster S which did not have visible lug screws or a magnifying date lens. Then in 2012, the Cartier Roadster collection was officially discontinued much to the dismay of many collectors and brand enthusiasts.
