Old-school IWC style lives in this IWC GST Perpetual Chronograph 3756-07 from This 43mm steel sports chronograph from the late great GST lineup combines the “king of complications” with a perpetual calendar and a stunning rhodium dial. The IWC GST model line was the 1990s standard-bearer for the Schaffhausen-based watchmaker's utility watch tradition. No-nonsense sports watches with complicated movements were the focus. The IWC GST Perpetual Chronograph was the price of the line. The GST Perpetual Chronograph's rugged stainless steel case frames an exotic rhodium-plated matte dial that remains legible despite its abundance of features. In those days, IWC aced the pure-function aspects of watch design, and the dial of the GST Perpetual Chronograph demonstrates why; even with a moon phase, date, day, month, year display, and three-register chronograph, all info jumps forth at a glance. Inside the case, which is water resistant to 120 meters (400 feet), IWC employs a heavily-modified version of the legendary ETA/Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement. This workhorse is as tough as the watch's Teutonic exterior, and the 7750 is among the most serviceable movements in the world of mechanical watches. This power plant will outlast its owner. Better still, IWC adds its industry-leading manufacture perpetual calendar module. Designed by IWC watchmaker Kurt Klaus in the early 1980s, this perpetual calendar offers two major advantages over its competitors. First, the calendar can be set entirely from a single position of the crown; there are no separate pushers or adjusters. Second, all calendar indications including the moonphase are interlinked and advance in coordinated sequence. Simply start advancing the date to the present, and the day, month, year, and moon phase move to keep in step. IWC introduced its brilliant modular bracelet on the GST, and owners continue to reap the benefits. Each link features a tool-free spring release button that can be activated with a toothpick, and every single link can be removed in order to ensure a perfect fit. A trigger-release clasp with beautiful machine-turned interior finish speaks to the attention that IWC lavished on the details.
