Seiko Prospex Diver 300M SLA019 GREEN 1968 Limited Edition SS Luxury Watch Review

Contact tmosso@thewatchbox.com for pricing and availability; Either I have it, or I can get it! The 2018 Seiko Prospex Diver 300M SLA019 1968 Automatic Diver Anniversary Limited Edition is Seiko’s take on the Rolex Submariner “Hulk.” Ok, perhaps that’s a bit of an exaggeration; this Seiko Prospex dive watch in forest green isn’t trying to be anything but a distinctive statement of Japanese watchmaking craft and capability. And on that count, the Seiko SLA019 is an unqualified (green ceramic) success. In almost every respect, this tribute the 1968 Seiko 6159-700X dive watch feels like a Grand Seiko in Seiko clothing. The 8L35 manufacture automatic movement is based on Grand Seiko’s 9S55; the “Zaratsu” polished case flanks are finished with the same laborious tin-plate buffing technique used on Grand Seiko watches; the diving clasp quite literally carries over from Grand Seiko dive watches. In other words, this is one “grand” Seiko, if you catch my drift… The case of the Seiko SLA019 is a monobloc structure similar to the 1968 original. All dial and movement components load through the front of the watch. This case construction helps render the SLA019 immune to helium intrusion during saturation dives; no helium escape valve is fitted because none is necessary. The watch boasts 300-meter water resistance and a full suite of diving refinements. A unidirectional diving bezel features a green ceramic bezel insert that recalls a certain famous green Rolex Submariner, but nothing else about this Seiko Prospex 1968 anniversary edition recalls the Rolex Hulk. A dial graced by applied indices boasts Seiko’s proprietary Lumibrite dial luminant material for visibility at night and during dives. Seiko’s 44.3mm stainless steel case is handsomely finished, but it’s also rugged; the monobloc case employs Seiko’s Diashield surface hardening process to resist scratches and scuffs. The 44.3mm stainless steel Seiko SLA019 also incorporates a full steel diving bracelet with a dedicated diving clasp; the clasp employs both trigger release and a clamshell lock for absolute security when closed. A diving extension with trigger release can be expanded or contracted while the Seiko Prospex Diver 300M remains on the wrist. This is a substantial guarantee against loss while operating in a marine environment, and it’s a refinement that the Seiko SLA019 shares with the Rolex Deepsea. For sizing easy and variety, Seiko includes a second accessory band in the form of a silicone dive strap and steel buckle.
