About Reverso

Is Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso pronounced “Jay-ger La-cole-tra?” “Shay-shere La-colt?” It depends who you ask. What is not up for interpretation, however, is that the Reverso is one of the most classic dress watches of all time. This piece is most identifiable by its rectangular case finished with horizontal engravings along the top and bottom. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso name comes from the watch’s distinctive revolving case, which allows the dial to be flipped, or reversed, over to reveal a secondary dial, see-through display, or most traditionally a solid steel caseback.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso History

Ironically, this dressy piece began its horological journey as a sports watch. Originally introduced in 1931, the Reverso design was born out of necessity. Polo players needed a watch durable enough to be worn while they played. The Reverso fit the bill, with the case allowing the shatter-prone crystal to be shielded on the inside of the case while the steel caseback absorbed the blows. The design did not take long to get accepted, and over the years JLC has released many flavors of the popular model.

What makes the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso so desirable?

Jaeger-LeCoultre is widely referred to as the watchmaker’s watchmaker. Many of the Swiss powerhouses that exist today have used JLC movements in their watches at some point in their history (and some in the not-so-distant history). When you’re buying a mechanical watch, it is reassuring to buy from a watchmaking house that has such a rich history in movement manufacturing. There is definitely a cool-factor there for those who are especially scrupulous about the movement that powers their watch. The Reverso itself is so desired because there is nothing else quite like it on the market. Sure, other squared watches exist, but the Reverso’s case puts it in a league of its own.

Why buy pre-owned Jaeger-LeCoultre Watches and the Reverso?

The secondary market is the best place to shop for JLC watches. Especially true for Reversos, there is a staggering amount of variety that has been released as the years have gone by. From eye-catching colors to grande complications, you never know when you will come across “the one” that you never knew existed in the first place. There is also a great deal of value for consumers when going pre-owned. It is certainly the more affordable option, and if you are eager to add a Reverso to your collection, Watchbox’s global inventory is the best place to start your search!
