Rolex Deepsea D-Blue: Is It The Ultimate Rolex Dive Watch? Luxury Preowned Watch Collector's Guide

Contact tmosso@thewatchbox.com for pricing and availability; Either I have it, or I can get it! The Rolex Deepsea Sea Dweller is the star on today’s episode of “Wake Up with Watches!” Tim Mosso leads an all-star cast of luxury preowned watches from Watchbox’s world-leading inventory. In addition to Rolex’s flagship dive watch, today’s edition includes the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and its Offshore cousin, an annual calendar chronograph from Patek Philippe, and the Sea Dweller’s nemesis, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, also features prominently. This is YouTube’s only curated gallery of luxury watches! Launched in 2008, the Rolex Deepsea is famous for its technology, size, and association with film director James Cameron. The latter link didn’t materialize until late 2014 when Rolex launched a special edition called the Deepsea D-Blue. Although not a limited-edition watch, the D-Blue carried both a price premium and a unique lacquered dial that fades from blue to black. Inspired by Cameron’s 2012 dive to the bottom of the Challenger Deep, the D-Blue dial mimicked the transition of ocean water from blue near the surface to black at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. For good measure, the D-Blue dial also includes a bright signal green “DEEPSEA” script in tribute to Cameron’s submersible, the Deepsea Challenger, that shares this color. Dial aside, the Deepsea D-Blue is like every other Rolex Deepsea, and today variant is the upgraded model that launched at Baselworld 2018. Aesthetics, size, and ergonomics were tailored subtly in order to create a more attractive dive watch that would fit better on small wrists. The 44mm case diameter and near-18mm thickness didn’t change, but Rolex did reduce the total span across the wrist and created a more handsome match between lug size and bracelet width. Inside the monumental Rolex Oystersteel (904L) case, the dial and Rolex caliber 3235 sit secure against water intrusion down to a rated depth of 12,800 feet. Because the Deepsea is an ISO 6245-complient dive watch, it has been tested to 125 percent of its rated depth before leaving Rolex. A complex assembly of 6mm sapphire crystal, steel cylinder, rubber seals, and titanium case back endow this Sea Dweller with its incredible water resistance, and a helium escape valve continues this model line’s long commitment to saturation divers. A Rolex caliber 3235 automatic movement provides motive power. This is the same movement used in the Submariner and 43mm Sea Dweller, and it provides 70 hours of power reserve. Hacking seconds, a quickset date, robust architecture, and an antimagnetic overcoil hairspring round out the features of this timekeeper. For good measure, the movement is a COSC certified Swiss chronometer. While the Oyster bracelet on the Deepsea Sea-Dweller is similar to that on other Rolex watches, its clasp includes exclusive features. The diving clasp includes a unique extension that allows up to twenty millimeters of incremental adjustment in two-millimeter increments. Unlike the Submariner and Sea Dweller 126600, this version of the Rolex Glidelock system can be adjusted while the watch remains on its owner’s wrist; this is protection against a lost watch in a deep-water environment. Additional clearance for dive suit fit is provided by a Fliplock fold-out extension. • Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding 15450OR.OO.1256OR.01 $57,950 o 37mm, rose gold, grey grande tapisserie dial • Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Scuba 100 Jahre Wempe diver $24,950 o 15340ST.OO.D002CA.01 • Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe 5000-36S30-B52A rose gold $16,950 • F.P.
