The First Alarm—Just A Matter of Time

Amidst a post-war economic recovery that brought a surge of new innovations, Jaeger-LeCoultre mastered chiming mechanisms to create a unique alarm watch that has been amazing collectors for decades. The iconic Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox collection was originally released in the 1950s, revolutionizing watchmaking trends of the time. It featured a stylish, groundbreaking new design compared to other pieces from the period, and its impressive automatic caliber 815 and alarm function were unprecedented. Additionally, the Memovox’s signature dial layout consists of concentric rings with a triangular marker for alarm time—but don’t worry, it’s time functionality isn’t hindered by the alarm. In fact, the time and alarm components are separated into two barrels to ensure that the clock’s power reserve isn’t affected by triggering the alarm. Because of this, the Memovox has two crowns for winding. This memorable collection was originally designed for international businessmen, and was the first automatic wristwatch to incorporate the mechanical alarm function. Moving to the modern era, several new iterations have been released as the Memovox stands the test of time. Explore the Memovox Collection

Between the 1950s and 1970s, Jaeger-LeCoultre leveraged the original Memovox’s popularity to craft four models that build off of its legacy. Learn more about these iterations and what makes them unique.

  • Memovox International

A common feature among several JLC timepieces, an international watch enables the wearer to change the time of 24 cities around the globe. In particular, this piece features an adapted dial layout to include a 24-hour time zone display along with the alarm function.

  • Memovox Parking

During Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 125th anniversary, the brand created this model with a practical new function that stunned enthusiasts—this watch reminded people when their parking meter would expire.

  • Memovox Deep Sea

As the first waterproof diving alarm watch, this model also had an acoustic signal to remind the wearer of diving time. Want to explore other dive watches? Browse our pre-owned collection from other top brands.

  • Memovox Polaris

Equipped with a rotating inner bezel to measure elapsed time, this model introduced the super-compressor case with a double layered back that amplified the alarm sound while remaining water resistant. Later, this watch inspired the design of the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris collection in 2018.

After decades of success, Jaeger-LeCoultre relaunched the Memovox collection in 2010, bringing two models back from the classic suite—the Master Memovox and Master Memovox International. These new iterations boast a fresh twist on the signature design, and are now crafted with updated calibres like the 956. Some of the latest models also operate on JLC’s in-house automatic movement calibre 958. Although the new models may be a bit sleeker and a bit more modern, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed—each piece still features the collection’s iconic “school bell” alarm sound. If you’re interested in watches from the relaunch, the Stainless Steel Master Control Memovox and Stainless Steel Master Control Memovox Timer are great options. Some limited edition releases are also available in rose gold.
