The Panerai Submersible, a Professional Diving Watch

Once a part of the Luminor family, the Panerai Submersible was launched as its own category of diving watches in 2019. As one of Panerai’s most sturdy and durable watches, the Submersible is inspired by the sea and designed to be immersed in water — its extreme reliability and exquisite design have even been compared to the Rolex DeepSea Sea-Sweller in this review.

Unique Iterations of the Submersible

Submersible Bronzo

In 2011, Panerai surprised the watchmaking industry by creating the rare Submersible Bronzo, a diving watch with a case made of bronze. This fascinating material ages with time, resulting in a patina which gives each timepiece a unique character, seen in reference PAM00671. The patina is a result of the bronze reacting with external agents like salt water. Newer models of the Panerai Submersible Bronzo like the PAM00968 feature a new design enhanced by a ceramic bezel.

Submersible CarboTech™

CarboTech™, Panerai’s carbon fiber proprietary material was first introduced on a Panerai Submersible in 2015. This material has an uneven, black matt color, with a zebra stripe pattern. View CarboTech™ in references PAM00979, PAM00960, and PAM01039 — no two watches are the same as appearance varies based on the cut of the material.

Submersible BMG-Tech™

Offering extreme resistance to corrosion and external shocks, Panerai’s BMG-Tech™ material enables watches to preserve their appearance over time. This alloy is made of bulk metallic glass that is lighter and harder than steel, but has a steel-like appearance. Frequently Asked Questions About the Panerai Submersible

How do you spot a fake Panerai Submersible?

There are a few telltale signs to look for when spotting a fake Panerai Submersible. On an authentic piece, there is not a marker at the 9 o’clock position, so the left subdial will be closer to the outer edge of the dial to make up for it. Next, every Panerai watch is equipped with twisted or angled lugs to ensure the watch has a better grip on the wrist — fake pieces typically feature straight lugs. Is a Panerai Luminor water-resistant?

Yes, the Panerai Luminor collection and the Panerai Submersible suite are both water-resistant. In fact, Luminor pieces boast up to a 200m water-resistance while Submersible models are water-resistant up to 300m and are considered among the elite when it comes to diving watches — quite literally, a collection designed to be submerged.
