Sporty and Versatile
Rolex has a long heritage of designing exceptional stainless steel watches, beginning with the Oyster in 1926. Prior to 1985, Rolex’s steel watches consisted of the commonly used 316L. While this material is durable and sturdy, it is prone to rusting over time. So in 1985, Rolex introduced their proprietary material Oystersteel, made of 904L steel, on the Sea-Dweller. In 2003, Rolex shifted to using 904L in all of their stainless steel models and bracelets because of its durability and sheen. Learn more about Oystersteel in our Proprietary Rolex Materials.

Overview of Rolex Steel Timepieces
Stainless steel is found throughout Rolex’s catalogue of timepieces, specifically in the Submariner, Datejust, Lady-Datejust, GMT-Master II, Daytona, Oyster Perpetual, Milgauss, Air-King, Explorer II, and Sky-Dweller collections. Markings on the crown of the watch underneath the Rolex logo indicate steel with either a line or three small dots.
As Rolex’s quintessential diving watch, the Submariner’s stainless steel construction provides resistance to corrosion as it is worn on the wrist of divers and vacationers alike. Top Submariner models include the Kermit and Hulk, both known for their green hue.
Designed for pilots, many top models are crafted in stainless steel, such as the Rolex Coke, with a red and black bezel, and the Rolex Pepsi, featuring a blue and red bezel.
The Daytona chronograph was designed for racing and motorsport. Once of the most popular stainless steel references is the Paul Newman Daytona, which recently sold for $17.8 million.
While the Datejust is available in stainless steel, the model is known for its two-toned Rolesor references, featuring stainless steel and gold, or stainless steel and rose gold.
Sophisticated, innovative, and in-demand, stainless steel Sky-Dweller models were first introduced to the model family in 2017.
