The History of Panerai Watches
Giovanni Panerai founded the Officine Panerai company in 1860 in Florence, Italy. By 1900, the company was under the leadership of Guido Panerai, Giovanni’s grandson. At the time, the brand was known for creating timepieces that were the perfect combination of Italian design, Swiss technology and passion of the sea. The brand soon became the official supplier of timepieces and precision instruments to the Royal Italian Navy, and at this time, had cases designed and manufactured by Rolex SA, with movements manufactured by the Swiss Cortebert. The initial Panerai watches produced in the Florence based workshop were released between the years of 1938 and 1970, with most of them being provided for the Italian Marina Militare. By 1970 the company no longer provided watches to this organization, which is when it began to make changes and offer the watches to the civilian market. By 1993, Panerai was considered a luxury watch brand all around the world, providing exquisite, precision timepieces synonymous with elegance and prestige.
What Makes Panerai So Desirable?
One factor making Panerai so desirable is the exclusivity factor this brand exudes. This company only created timepieces for combat forces for many years, only in recent years, making a change to the civilian market. Today, Panerai watches are in high demand, with vintage options being extremely desirable, as they were never actually sold to civilians new.
